How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Windows 98

It is easy to setup Windows 98 for the Internet connection. Microsoft equipped Windows 98 with a series of Wizards helping with the setup. "Setup by System" page in this section gives all details required to answer the questions when using the Wizard.

Windows 98 comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 (MSIE), a Web browser, and Outlook Express, an e-mail and news program. There are many other utilities which can replace MSIE and Outlook Express, for example Netscape Communicator, Eudora (e-mail and news only), Free Agent (Usenet newsgroup reader), etc. You can start accessing the Internet with software already provided with Windows 98, but later you may like to try other readily available tools. They all can co-exist on one computer, so there is no need to remove the Microsoft software. Many Internet tools are free.

Windows 98 can be installed and configured in many different ways to suit individual style of work. There is no single "correct" set of instructions to connect your computer to the Internet. The instructions you see here are sample only.

If your desktop shows at least Connect to the Internet icon all software required to setup the connection has been installed on your computer, and is ready to be configured. It also means that the connection was not sonfigured before. Correct steps are described in the section Win98 First Time (see menu on the left margin).

If you see Explorer icon (blue "e"), Outlook Express icon, and possibly some other icons representing other Internet programs (Netscape Navigator, Free Agent, etc), this indicates that your computer has been already configured for connecting to another Internet Service Provider (ISP). You have to change various parameters to connect to Hermes Internet. To do this, go to Win98 Reconfiguring (see menu on the left margin).
