How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Windows 3.1 or 3.11

To connect to Internet you need to perform the following two major steps:

STEP ONE – you need to install software and configure Windows 3.x for dialing and connecting to Internet
STEP TWO – after your details are automatically verified and the connection with Hermes Internet has been established, you have to start a program which allows you to use one of many Internet resources – some examples of such programs are: Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Eudora e-mail, etc.

It is important to understand that both the above steps are independent – you can perform the first step only, and gain full access to Internet, but without performing the second step you won't be able to see or do anything interesting. You can also perform step two only, and start your Internet application program (for example Netscape Navigator), but without connecting to Internet you will not be able to use it.

You can get the above software from many sources. There are various complete Internet connection kits, or single pieces of software. At a small charge we also offer a Windows 3.1 / 3.11 Internet Connection Kit which includes Microsoft TCP/IP stack and dialer (needed for step one above), and Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 3.x with browser and e-mail (needed for step two above). The kit comes on four diskettes with full instructions.

Depending on which software you decide to install configuration is a bit different. Following instructions are universal, and should help you to set up almost every combination of software to connect with Hermes Internet.

STEP ONE – Dialing and Connecting to Internet

Dialler (PPP Dialer) – one of the most common dialers comes from Shiva. See the sample screen below. It requires the following parameters (if you have another dialer, some field names may be slightly different):

enter the Internet user name we assigned you (first part of your e-mail address), not your real name

User name

enter password received from us

Password

anything, or leave blank

Current location
Number to dial

STEP TWO – using Internet
(running Internet application programs)

Once STEP ONE is completed successfully you are connected to Internet. To use Internet you need to start one of many readily available Internet access programs. Some examples of such programs are: Netscape Navigator (Web browser, e-mail, news, and more), Microsoft Internet Explorer (similar in functionality to Netscape navigator), Qualcomm Eudora (e-mail only), etc. There are many other programs, some are shareware (they require a payment, usually 30 days after installing), some are free, some may already be installed on your computer.

Each program typically requires to be configured with information about your user name, password, and possibly names of Hermes Internet mail and news servers you are connecting to.  For sample configuration screen for various programs see links from "Setup by Applications" accessible from previous screens.
