Windows 98 – Connecting And Disconnecting From The Internet

There are various ways you can start connection to the Internet.

Clicking on the Internet Explorer icon starts Dial-up connection panel, which allows you to decide do you want to work offline, or do you, want to connect. Selecting connect automatically allows you to start the dialing automatically next time you click on Internet Explorer icon (if you previously configured Internet Explorer so it opens with a blank page, Explorer will start, and stay with the blank screen without initiating the dialer. Just type any Web address for the above process to start. You can than select "connect automatically" to avoid typing the Web address next time).

Sample screen shot below shows user "derek". Note that the password is visible as ******** not as a real pasword.

When you start Outlook Express the very first time you have to select a folder where you want to keep your e-mail messages. You can select any folder.

You can also start connection to the Internet from My Computer – Control Panel – Dial-up Networking by clicking on Hermes Internet icon, and clicking on Connect.

Monitoring status of your connection and disconnecting

When the connection is active, you will find a small icon with picture of two computers in the right hand corner of the task bar. Right clicking on it pops up a menu with two items – Status and Disconnect. Status (see right) shows a panel with the details of your connection, and disconnect button. Please notice that your application program (for example e-mail program) may be also setup to disconnect you automatically from the Internet after you close it, or finish receiving e-mail.
