Windows 98 – Setting up The Internet Connection For The First Time

Start Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard by clicking on Connect to the Internet icon.

Select the first option, Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider (…), click on Next (Hermes Internet is an Internet Service provider (ISP), sometimes also referred to as Internet Access Provider).

On the next panel select Connect using my phone (unless you have a network (LAN), i.e. two or more computers connected together).

Select Create a new dial-up connection. Please note that if you already have other connections setup, they will show in the window below. The sample screen shot shows existing connection named "Hermes Internet".

Type Hermes Internet dialup phone number 47803000 (the number your computer dials to connect to our service). Deselect Dial using area code and country code! If you leave this option selected, your modem will dial "61" in front of the number, and you will get busy signal.

Type your user name (the sample screen below shows user name: yourusername) and the password which we have allocated to you.

Next screen –select no when asked do you want to use advanced settings?

Next screen – type Dial-Up connection name. This can be anything, for example Hermes Internet, or My Internet Connection.

Next screen asks you do you want to setup your Internet mail account. Select yes, and enter:

Display name – your real name
Internet e-mail address –format: xxxx@hermes.net.au, where "xxxx" is your user name received from us
E-mail server names (both incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP): mail.hermes.net.au

Friendly name:
any name, for example: My Internet mail

News Account

Next screens ask you for parameters to setup news account. They are the same as for mail. News (NNTP) server name is loomi.telstra.net As a friendly name you can type anything, for example: My News

Please note that you can setup many news accounts. For example hermes Internet operates internal news server for members only, the server name is blue.hermes.net.au

Next screen asks do you want to setup your Internet Directory Service? Say no.

Finish completes the setup. You may notice that two icons – Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, replaced the original icon Connect to the Internet. You are now ready to connect to the Internet.

Additional Settings

There are many additional settings, which you should check. They decide how your connection behaves, how your browser starts, how your connection terminates, etc.

You can access this very important Internet Properties panel by placing the cursor on the Internet Explorer icon, and clicking with your right mouse button. A small menu pops out. Select Properties.

Some of the settings are:

General allows you to setup, which Web page should open when you connect to the Internet. Default is Microsoft home page; you can change this to any other Web site, for example our home page: http://www.hermes.net.au/ or to blank.

Connection – Settings (see screen shot below) allow you to select dialing profile (if you have more than one), set disconnect parameters (for example disconnect if idle for 20 minutes), etc.
