How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Windows CE

Windows CE has built-in support for connecting to Internet using PPP (Point-to-Point protocol). TCP/IP is the only protocol supported by Windows CE.

Hermes Internet uses Shiva brand of communication equipment (made by Shiva Corp, USA). Microsoft and Shiva discovered a problem in Windows CE Dialler PPP implementation for CE palmtops. The problem caused failed connection, and dropping connection after two minutes. The bugs were fixed and around March 1998 Microsoft released a new CE PPP dialer version for palmtops in a PROM code format. This PROM upgrade is available free from palmtop distributors.

LCP negotiation problems when connecting to a Shiva remote access server:

Here is a description of the problem if you need to quote it to your palmtop service department:

The user may appear to be connected to the remote access server, but they are not allowed to perform any IP functions. The connection drops after two minutes. The remote access server log does not record the expected "protocol reject" messsages for protocols other than IP.
