How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Windows 95To connect to Internet you need to perform two major steps:
It is important to understand that both the above steps are independent you can perform the first step only, and gain full access to Internet, but without performing the second step you won't be able to see or do anything interesting. You can also perform step two only, and start your Internet application program (for example Netscape Navigator), but without connecting to Internet you will not be able to use it. The instructions which follow were prepared for Windows 95, however the setup is very similar for so called "B" version (late version) of Windows 95. STEP ONE Dialing and Connecting to Internet
(1) Make sure that you have modem connected and properly configured in Win95.If not, use Control Panel Add New Hardware, and install your modem. It is not uncommon for a brand new modem to be faulty!
(2) Make sure that you have Network icon in the Control Panel. If you do not have Network icon, you have to install Windows 95 network component from Control Panel Add Remove Programs Windows Setup by selecting Communication item. Network must show under Configuration tab (see sample screen below) at least two components TCP/IP and Dial-Up Adapter (sample screen below shows other entries which are likely to be different in your case. You may also have no components installed). If you do not see TCP/IP and Dial-Up Networking, you need to install both components as explained below. |
| click on the Add button | |
| double click on Adapter | |
| under Manufacturers select Microsoft, on the right side (Network Adapters) select Dial-Up Adapter and click on OK |
If after clicking OK you are asked for your computer identification details, select Identification tab and enter anything (what you enter is not relevant) for Computer Name, Workgroup and Computer Description.
| click on the Add button | |
| double click on Protocol |
| under Manufacturers select Microsoft, on the right side (Network Protocols) select TCP/IP and click on OK |
Windows 95 will ask you for the original CD-ROM and copy required files. Please verify that you have only one TCP/IP entry (it is possible to install TCP/IP twice, and have two TCP/IP entries, but even if they have identical parameters, this would prevent you from connecting, or create unpredictable results).

Once STEP ONE is completed successfully you are connected to the Internet. To use the Internet you need to start one of many readily available Internet access programs. Some examples of such programs are: Netscape Navigator (Web browser, e-mail, news, and more), Microsoft Internet Explorer (similar in functionality to Netscape navigator), Qualcomm Eudora (e-mail only), etc. There are many other programs, some are shareware (they require a payment, usually 30 days after installing), some are free, some may already be installed on your computer.
Each program typically requires to be configured with information about your user name, password, and possibly names of Hermes Internet mail and news servers you are connecting to. For sample configuration screen for various programs see links from this page (left hand margin), and links from "Setup by Applications" accessible from previous screens.
