Overseas Conversion
of ATPL Air Law
AAOS Examination
Thank you for your interest in converting your licence to an Australian ATPL (Aeroplanes).
This conversion requires that you complete the Australian Air Law examination (referred to
as the AAOS) and pass the Australian Command Instrument Rating examination. Prior to
issuing the Australian ATPL, you will need to hold the Command Instrument Rating -
Multi-engine, 1,500 hours aeronautical experience and a Class 1 medical certificate.
The AAOS examination is only available to persons who actually hold an ATPL with another
country. To have just passed the ATPL theory examination in a foreign country is in itself
not sufficient. You must obviously have passed the examination, but you must have taken
that extra step to actually hold the ATPL licence in order to do the AAOS conversion.
THE AIR LAW EXAMINATION
You are required to book and pay for the examination through the Civil Aviation Safety
Authority (CASA formerly our CAA) about four weeks prior to the examination sitting at a
cost of $AUD100.00. For the AAOS sitting on the 16FEB99 this means that youd have to
book in by the 22JAN99. Late bookings simply are not accepted. You can book by phone
(Australia 06 217 1082 during working hours) and pay by credit card at the same time. The
examination is available only once every second month (Oct, Dec, Feb, Apr, Jun etc),
always on a Tuesday.
Should you desire to sit the examination outside Australia (say in the USA) then this may
be possible. Our CASA looks at such requests very carefully and do not always agree to
such requests but consider each one on a case by case basis. In particular
CASA have very real concerns that the examination be conducted properly and that the
examination paper is not in any way compromised.
The AAOS examination consists of 50 multiple choice questions, each worth one mark. To
obtain your pass you must achieve a minimum of 80% within the 3 hours allocated. The
examination is all open book and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have a
complete set of current documents for the examination. Expect your result in the mail, to
take about 7 to 10 working days after the date of sitting.
WHAT YOU GET
You are provided with a booklet of questions, arranged into various topics for you to
research and find the answers from the CAOs, CARs etc. To assist you to become familiar
with the various documents, a CAO Index is included which provides an extensive listing of
the CAOs 20 - 95 and many cross related references into the CARs and AIP. This is an
invaluable aid in helping you to learn your way around the documents. On completion of the
questions, you will find the answers with their references are provided in a sealed
envelope so you can see how well you performed. Should you still be unable to sort out any
question/s then you also have access to the 1800 Help Line to ensure that you
get it right.
Having completed the Air Law questions, a practise examination package is then sent to
you. This includes a quiz and a full AAOS examination (with answers) for your final
practise. This provides you with additional exposure to exam type questions and allows you
to see hoe you will perform under exam conditions.
Generally students who are familiar with the Australian documents can complete the course
in only three or four days. But, if you are new to the Australian documents and
particularly if you have difficulty understanding legal jargon then you may
find that it may take up to two weeks to complete.
Copying, duplication or reproduction of any of this material is not permitted.
Note:
The questions supplied are not actual examination questions. Just questions of a
similar type and difficulty. Australias CASA do not release the examination
questions unlike some other countries (eg. United States of America) where the entire
library of examination questions are available to candidates.
WHAT YOU NEED
To complete the course, and also the examination, you will require a complete set of
current documents, including:
CASA take a lot of care with their examinations, to ensure that questions are challenging,
relevant and current. So please do not handicap yourself in the examination by using out
of date publications.
You will find that most of the questions will be covered in the CAOs, CARs and the AIP
with very few, if any, actually requiring DAPS or the CAAPs. But I would strongly suggest
that at least for the examination you have a copy of these as well.
If you are using Jeppesen publications, then you are at liberty to continue
doing so and they are quite acceptable to use in the examination.
COST
Our AAOS course costs $AUD250.00, payment may be made by cheque, Mastercard, VisaCard
or BankCard. Please make cheques payable to Secombe Aviation Pty Ltd,
thankyou.
I trust this is of assistance to you in planning the conversion of your ATPL licence.
