There are a total of seven individual ATPL subject exams which need to be passed in order to be granted an Australian ATPL (Aeroplanes). All subjects have a pass mark of 70% except for Air Law which is 80%. With 'Secombe Aviation' you can do each subject individually, either by correspondence or in our Bankstown classrooms. There is no requirement for you to do all the subjects at once, you can simply do one or two subjects; then come back for other subjects at a later time until you have finished all seven. The ATPL subjects are:

Meteorology is one of the easier subjects, one that many students study first. Much of ATPL Meteorology is familiar territory, reviewing basic circulation, winds and forecasts. AIR LAW BUY NOW

Now with 4 full exams

Classroom Course, deposit $50, total cost $190
Our next Bankstown classroom course is 30 - 31 October 2025

Air Law requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the various rules and regulations under which pilots operate. Here it is aimed primarily at aircraft with a MTOW above 5700 kgs, engaged in IFR RPT operations. This is quite a different situation from the VFR Day syllabus used in PPL/CPL studies. This is an 'open book' exam, but one requiring that you do have detailed knowledge of what is in those books and where to find the relevant information.

Navigation is also an extension of what you have learned already. You still need to determine TASs and ground speeds on your Navigation computer, but now these are much faster than you've used previously, typically 250 - 480 kts. There is a lot to learn. Yet as you work progressively through this volume, you'll find the hours slip by as you get intrigued by the challenges presented. Many students like to complete Navigation early in their studies as like Meteorology, they can relate easily to most of the concepts involved. It also lays a foundation upon which you can attack Flight Planning with confidence.

Correspondence $600
Classroom course, deposit $200, total cost $790

Flight Planning is an exciting and rewarding challenge. It is certainly one of the major subjects and will take significantly more time to complete than any other subject. However, the rewards are worth the effort. Our course breaks Flight Planning down into small, manageable 'chunks' which allows you to learn each piece individually. It then shows you how to combine aspects of Flight Planning into solving real problems. It is a 'hands on' subject where you will work progressively through exercises, building your understanding and confidence and progressively working towards solving exam style questions. At the end of this subject, you will have a thorough understanding of CPs, PNRs (for Normal and Abnormal Operations; both on track and off-track), fuel policy and a host of other elements which make this subject so interesting.
