How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Macintosh OS 8.x

There are many pictures (screen shots) on this page. To avoid frustrating long wait while the pictures are loading to your computer, we used lower resolution graphics. All relevant entries are explained in the text, please use the pictures as a guide only.

Macintosh OS 8 is very easy to setup for Internet connection.

Assistants.gif (5243 bytes) Start Internet Setup Assistant. The Assistant is located in the Assistants folder on your hard disk. Follow the steps below.

Internet Setup Assistant 1.gif (9769 bytes) Screen 1 – click on Update, and click on right bottom arrow to go to the next screen.

Internet Setup Assistant 2.gif (7593 bytes) Click on Add Internet Configuration, then click on right arrow. You can also Modify or Remove existing configuration, if you have some previousle created configurations.

Internet Setup Assistant 3.gif (9328 bytes) Type in Hermes Internet, or any other name. Below: How will you be connecting to the Internet? click on Modem.

Internet Setup Assistant 4.gif (9256 bytes) Select your modem from the list. If your modem is not listed, try different modems, or contact the place you got your modem from for advice. Select your port (typically Modem Port). Select Tone or Pulse (typically Tone).

Internet Setup Assistant 5.gif (7691 bytes) Type in local access phone number to dial Hermes Internet service: 47803000. Type in your user ID, for example: joedoe Type in your password, for example: joe97do13e

Internet Setup Assistant 6.gif (6615 bytes) IP address...? click no.

Internet Setup Assistant 7.gif (8209 bytes) Type in: primary and secondary DNS (Domain Name Server): 203.35.8.194 and 139.130.4.5 Type in Domain Name: hermes.net.au

Internet Setup Assistant 8.gif (7777 bytes) Type in your email address, for example: joedoe@hermes.net.au and password (which we gave you with your new Internet account), for example: joe97do13e

Internet Setup Assistant 9.gif (9102 bytes) Type in your POP account, for example: joedoe@mail.hermes.net.au and SMTP host computer name: mail.hermes.net.au – notice prefix mail (mail server name).

Internet Setup Assistant 10.gif (8323 bytes) Type in NNTP news server name: loomi.telstra.net

Internet Setup Assistant 11.gif (7379 bytes) Click Go Ahead (if you want to connect now, click Connect When Finished). You can also review the settings by clicking on Show Details.

Connecting to the Internet

There are several ways you can connect to the Internet:

	use the Internet Dialer located in the Internet folder,
	use OT/PPP dialer accessible from Apple Menu, Control Panels, PPP – see the picture below,
	open any Internet application, this may start MacOS 8 dialing and connecting to the Internet. If it does not, use one of the above methods.

Please notice that "Name" is the Internet user name allocated to you (first part of your e-mail address), not your real name!
