How to Connect to Hermes Internet Using Macintosh OS 7.x

To dial and connect to Internet from Macintosh computer you need to have two modules present and properly configured:

TCP stack. This may be MacTCP, or Open Transport (OT). Both MacTCP and OT perform the same function, but only one should be present – MacTCP and OT can not run together on one machine!
PPP protocol extension. This may be MacPPP, FreePPP (both are functionally similar) or Open Transport PPP (OT PPP).

Depending on the version of your Macintosh OS (or Macintosh System), and depending on which TCP and PPP modules you decided to use, setting up required parameters is a bit different.

Below you will find advice how to configure MacTCP, MacPPP and how to connect to Internet.

To use Internet you need to start one of many readily available Internet access programs. Some examples of such programs are: Netscape Navigator (Web browser, e-mail, news, and more), Microsoft Internet Explorer (similar in functionality to Netscape navigator), Qualcomm Eudora (e-mail only), Claris Emailer, etc.

Each program typically requires to be configured with information about your user name, password, and possibly names of Hermes Internet mail and news servers you are connecting to.  For sample configuration screen for various programs see links from "Setup by Applications" accessible from previous screens.

Setting up MacTCP.

Open Control Panel MacTCP
Select icon "PPP" (MacPPP or FreePPP), and click More. Set up fields as follows:
Obtain Address – select manually. In Gateway Address field type 0.0.0.0
Obtain Address – select Server

verify that Obtain Address is at "Server", and Gateway Address is "0.0.0.0"

IP Address – select Class C
(subnet mask should change automatically to 255.255.255.0)
Domain Name Server information:
Domain (fist line): hermes.net.au
IP address (first line): 203.35.8.194
Domain (second line): hermes.net.au
IP address (second line): 139.130.4.5
Click OK and close MacTCP

Setting up MacPPP (or FreePPP).

Open control panel ConfigPPP, click New and name your setup (for example "Hermes")
(for FreePPP – open FreePPP setup, and select Accounts tab)
Select your modem port and set the port speed (it should be faster then your modem speed, for example 57,600 for 28,800bps modem), select modem control as CTS/RTS, and tone dial. Modem init can be left empty, unless your modem requires special entries.
Type phone number to dial Hermes Internet – 47803000
Enter your user name (not your real name, but the user name which we allocated to you – see the first page of this note) and password. If you leave those fields blank, on every connection you will be ask to enter your user name and password.

Please notice that there is no need for a Connect Script! Hermes Internet is a modern system, using the latest technology, and is set up to be as easy to use as possible. You do not require any login sequence connect script (select option Connect Directly).

Connecting to Internet.

Simply open ConfigPPP and click Open (or Open PPP Connection if using FreePPP). Observe status report of the connection. If there is something wrong with your configuration, the last message indicates how far the dialing in progressed.
