The ATPL (A) examination comprises a series of seven individual subject parts. All questions are multiple choice, i.e. no written answers at all, and each question stands alone and is not dependant upon any other question. This means that if you get one question wrong, your error will have no effect on any other question. You may sit the examination parts in any order you wish.

In order to attempt any ATPL (A) examination, a candidate must hold a pass in the CPL (A) theory examination or equivalent training.

In order to be awarded an ATPL (A) theory pass, CASA requires: 1 that all the subject parts of the examination are passed within a three (3) year period from the date of the first attempt, successful or otherwise. 2 Air Law must be passed within the 12 month period immediately prior to the award of the ATPL (A) theory pass.

These dates are based on the actual date each exam was attempted.

CYBEREXAM UPDATE

CASA through Assessment Services Pty Ltd (ASPL) have introduced "CyberExams". This involves a number of minor changes, some of which you may not know. Some points to note are:

Exam Fees are now in two parts, a CASA fee and a charge by ASPL for Delivering each individual exam part (for actual ASPL Delivery fees see Exam Booking Procedures & Fees below). The CASA Exam Fees is $100 but it buys you one attempt at each of the seven subject parts. If you fail any one part, then you will automatically have to pay another $100 to re-sit that particular subject plus the ASPL Delivery Fee.

What happens if I fail? If you fail an individual subject, then you will NOT be able to re-sit that subject for a minimum period of 28 days. If however you fail three exams in succession (they can be any three subject parts, not necessarily failing the same part three times) then you will not be able to sit an exam for THREE months! If you do get to the situation where you have failed two parts in a row, then please ensure you pass the third to avoid this problem. Should you be unfortunate to fail any subject part, we will still be there to help you within your normal support period that comes with your course purchase.

Does the CyberExam change what I need to learn? No. There is no change to the ATPL syllabus - the information you need to know remains exactly the same. Students who have tried the CyberExam system have had no troubles adapting to this new method of questioning - you too should find it to be easy to follow. One question per page and you can easily scroll forward or backward as often as you wish. For a sample CyberExam see CASA's web site at

www.casa.gov.au/avreg/fcl_lic/fcl_exam/cyberexam/cyberprac.htm

What does the CyberExam change? CyberExams simply change the way the exam itself is presented to you. Instead of being typed out on paper, you read the questions off a computer monitor, do any necessary calculation (still using pen and paper) and then make your choice of answer on the computer. The exam still needs to be booked in advance through ASPL and sat at an approved exam centre under supervision (you can't do it at home on your own PC). The great news with CyberExams is that you should be able to book an exam on a date which is more convenient to you instead of the old fixed exam dates. Secondly, when you finish the exam, your exam result and knowledge deficiency report will be available almost immediately so you'll know whether to celebrate your pass or go back to the books to do some more study. Thirdly, all exams will be timed electronically (a "time remaining" clock is displayed on the computer screen) so there'll be no argument whether the supervisor allowed you more or less time than permitted - everyone gets the same.

____________________________

The bottom line is simple, be prepared! Do the work before you book an exam. Failing even one subject now automatically incurs a cost of at least $100 plus ASPL fee, and at least a 28 day delay before you can re-sit that subject. Take your ATPL studies seriously - after all you are aiming for a career in an airline, so let's learn as much as you can now so you not only pass these ATPL exams, but also to have the knowledge to impress any airline interview panel.
