The Internet, like any 'community', has its darker side. Hate mail, racist speeches, pornographic material, bomb and drug formulas, and other sensitive and inappropriate information is being
freely available along with everything else. You can keep this information away from your
computer. The list below contains short description (from manufacturer Web
sites) and links to software known as "filtering", "content
restriction" or "censoring" utilities. Such utilities are often
bundled with other tools, like for example anti virus software (see Norton
Internet Security below).
Popular software packages are readily available from all computer shops,
including large retailers like Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, Grace Brothers,
K-Mart, etc. Most of them can be also downloaded directly from their publisher
Web site. If required, we can get a copy of filtering software for you for the
same price as sold by major retailers.
HOWEVER: please remember conclusion of Australian
CHOICE magazine which recently examined seven Internet filtering products, found most of them lacking,
and concluded:
"...there's no substitute for parental
supervision."
