When you say you create your own reality you need to understand a few things in order to grasp what that really means. You do not create your own reality with your will or you mind; that is with your desires. It does not work quite like that.
Reality creation proceeds from what Seth calls the level of intention. That is, you create the reality you intend, which is not necessarily the same as the one you (wilfully) desire.
Now you must understand that intention is not necessarily conscious in the sense that we understand every day ego consciousness. In fact intention works rather more easily from the unconscious level where it is relatively free of wilful interference.
Of course you can consciously intend things and create a reality in that way but that takes rather more effort. This is because the incarnate ego is primarily focussed in the physical world and finds it difficult to free itself to create in this way. It is not easy to free yourself from old beliefs, your unconscious patterns and to see that the psyche is real and is the source of physical manifestation.
So we need to look at what intention is and how it works.
Intention is the way in which you focus on and choose amongst probabilities, it is the directed and focused imagination. I t may be helpful to use the analogy of the autonomic systems in the body and the physical instincts which are the bodies intentions that it behave in certain ways which ensure its maintenance and survival. Likewise the psychic totality of our being has to keep things going in order to ensure our survival at its level of existence. Every moment in the life of the body and psyche is a vast range of probabilities and an opportunity therefore to choose in creating you own reality in the next moment. Mostly your unconscious systems do the choosing for you and so you most likely don't feel that you have much choice, or that you are creating your own reality, but in both cases, with body and psyche, your unconscious beliefs play their part as well, injecting their desires. And these don`t always follow the best intentions of the Self.
But when the wilful part of you hears that you create your own reality it decides that it had better take over the choosing and create the reality it wants. It does not understand about intention or often even the nature of reality as a range of probabilities. So it sets out on the basis of its beliefs (conscious and unconscious) or your fantasies to create what is sees as the reality of its choosing.
This exercise doesn't go very well mostly, because as we said reality is created at the level of intention not will.
You see you actually need to choose from amongst the full range of probabilities actually available, which does not mean anything goes, at the time you are making the choice. If you choose from your fantasies (which may try to choose non existent probabilities) or your past belief patterns (which may limit your choice to old patterns to which they are biased) you miss out on a whole range of probabilities. And don't forget your unconscious beliefs start out with a head start in the reality creation stakes until you are better aligned to the Self.
So you need to open yourself to the full range of probabilities. Then you can align your will to the intention to choose what is available for your most creative and fulfilling development. In this way you really allow yourself to create your own reality. This is not what you wilfully desire at the superficial level but what is available when you wilfully surrender and allow what the Self is guiding you towards. If you can manage it you will not be disappointed.
Your life is a creation and as the creator of your own life, like any artist, you must take account of the medium in which you work. That is the range of probabilities from which you choose in the physical universe you inhabit. If you have taken the time to prepare your medium you are much more likely to be happy with your creation. If you do not pay the medium due respect but try to wilfully bend it to your desires without care for its qualities you are likely to end up disappointed with the outcome.
That you create your own reality is not a belief or an ideology it is an essential psychic fact of your existence. But, your beliefs and interpretations relating to how you approach such a perspective will have a profound effect on how you experience it. These determine whether it proves fertile ground for sustainable growth and change or the basis of self-undermining failure to come up with the goods.
Each day of our life may be seen in analogy as like a play that has to be rehearsed and directed. The director is our greater entity, or what C G Jung called his No. 2 personality and later the Self, the all knowing and eternal reality of which our every day personality is but one expression. The conscious personality is the lead player and other characters in the play are other aspects of our multi-dimensional nature.
The directing and rehearsing of the play takes place in the psyche, the world of dreams and our greater non-physical reality, mostly when we are asleep and not controlling our perception from the level of every day consciousness. The Self as director and each player has right of input and negotiation about how the roles will be acted in living our daily life. In this way the whole being that we are is creating our daily life reality. The conscious personality, however, also has free will so it can deviate from the agreed and rehearsed plan to some extent, for as Jung puts it about the Self`s involvemetnt;
How we deviate usually involves our conscious life attitudes and beliefs which may differ greatly from the way things are seen terms of the Self's view. If we deviate too far then things will go `wrong`. Unfortunately the conscious personality also has a way of forgetting what it agreed to so it most often blames others for the problems that develop, having forgotten what it had previously negotiated and agreed to.
Maybe these difficulties which arise can be renegotiated and solved and maybe not. This depends upon further negotiations and rehearsals.
So, we create our own reality but not in a superficial way, not like a wish list that we just have to mentally concentrate on to pull out of the universal wishing well. It is created in a complex negoti- ation involving our whole being which is much greater than we recall. Our every day conscious- ness has mostly forgotten the Self and the soul`s multidimensional expression in other realities or lives of which the everyday me that I experience is just one expression in a much greater whole.
