TIBETAN REFUGEES IN INDIA

The reason why Tibetans are refugees in India is because Tibet was captured by the Chinese in 1949. The Chinese thought that Tibet is was a very isolated place that did not make relationships with other countries. Before they completely took over Lhasa in 1959 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama left and escaped to in India.

The Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to give some land for Tibetan refugees. Now more than 130,000 Tibetans live outside of Tibet, most as refugees in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

"The cause of our people will prevail because, no matter how ruthless the Chinese are and how powerful, their human spirit cannot be vanquished by physical force alone"

His Holiness the Dalai Lama
