Reconciliation is primarily about understanding both differences and commonalities, about acknowledging and exploring with humility and compassion our past(s) and present(s) that we might imagine some kind of future where different perspectives, values and beliefs may coexist and be respected in this country. (Dani) To reconcile differences between us. (Lorna) Reconciliation is an internal process first and foremost. Then it flows outward. It is a process of attending to the matter of the relationship between non-indigenous Australians and the first Australians. It must lead to a place where both sides feel seen and heard and respected. And it must express itself in a treaty and land rights for the first Australians (Madhi and Rod) Reconciliation is Aboriginals and others discussing together a way of all Australians being treated equally with white, recognising the past discrimination against the native population. This cannot be achieved without an apology to the stolen generation by the current government or with the extinguishing of Native Title. (Joy) Reconciliation means to accepting that something was done that caused hurt; making a sincere apology for that wrong doing; acceptance of the apology by the wronged party; then moving forward together with mutual respect acknowledging our differences and that we may not always agree with one another but can live in harmony. (Margaret) Reconciliation means to me: equal opportunity/freedom to be who we want to be. Equal value/recognition of divergent cultures. Recognition of similarities rather than differences. (Joanne) Reconciliation - Focus on shared common issues, similarities as human beings for everyone living in this country. Differences recognised as positive factors not causes of fear or division. National feeling of unity an positivism between all races in the future. Redressing issue of white domination and discrimination striving together for justice and equality an satisfaction as a nation and as individuals/families /communities. (Kathleen) Reconciliation - A coming together of ideas/culutres/people that are not in complete agreement/sympathy. An acknowledgment of differneces but a willingness to find some points of agreement or just to celebrate and accept the differences. To learn tolerance. The aim being harmony. (Shirley) Reconciliation - Partnership. Working two ways - Anglo, Aboriginal. Looking at values/class - reframing approaches outside our comfort zones. Non-Aboriginal people reaching out doing more of the work. Thinking -head&heart in gear. Native Title. Nationally - sharing maturity and generosityof spirit - our human characteristics. ( Mary) |
