A rough guide to Catholic subcultures
I read somewhere that when a Protestant Christian wants to reform the Church they start a new denomination. When a Catholic Christian wants to reform the Church they start a new order or apostolate. Lots of people get this idea that to be Christian they look for a denomination that suits them. A cheerful sort might go Pentecostal, a more morose person might choose Calvinism. This sounds quite mad.
The Catholic Church is not just another denomination. It is the One, True Church established by Christ. Because people have this mindset that you choose a Church to suit yourself this sounds arrogant. Like someone saying that lightly boiled is the only way to serve eggs. A Church is not a matter of choice. Every Christian chooses Christ (or Christ chooses every Christian) so they should be aiming to find this One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that He founded on the Apostles.
Having found this One True Church you gain the Truth guaranteed. Now instead of debating over the perpetual Virginity of Our Lady or infant baptism you are free to make the real choices. What apostolate are you called to?
The links here are to apostolates that I know of, so there is an Australian bias. Particularly the area of Sydney. This list is not exhaustive, just a taste of the rich and varied world of the Catholic Church. For a bigger list you might try Catholic Culture (formerly PetersNet).
Warning: many of these urls I am typing up from memory. A quick google might help if you find broken links.
