State Records of NSW and the Royal Australian Historical Society

a seminar on
23 May 2007

to learn about the diverse community groups that have contributed to the State's history and character through their various business enterprises. There will be talks by representatives from the Chinese, Croatian and Lebanese communities in NSW. They will be joined by speakers from State Records, National Archives of Australia, Historic Houses Trust of Australia and the City of Sydney archives.

This event is part of Information Awareness Month.

English or Chinese.

The Chinese Australian Historical Society Inc in conjunction with the Jessie Street National Women Library is holding a meeting to set up a workshop for Chinese women in Sydney interested in writing their life stories in English or Chinese. This project and its workshops will play a critical part in enabling such stories to be retained by the community both now and in the future.

It is anticipated that the formation of a project committee would be organised from the preliminary workshop. Anyone interested is invited to attend and contribute their ideas.

Refreshments will be served and a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Tracking the Dragon:
Chinese Heritage Places in
Central Western New South Wales

An illustrated talk by Barbara Hickson,
Architect and Heritage Consultant, Mudgee

Ms Hickson conducted a major survey of Chinese heritage places in Central Western New South Wales for
the NSW Heritage Office and the NSW Chinese Australian Cultural Heritage Project (CACH-NSW).
She has located and documented over sixty heritage sites and places which have been listed in the
NSW Chinese State Heritage Inventory and will appear on the National Database of Chinese Australian Heritage.

Our History Is Still Being Written:
The Story of Three Chinese-Cuban Generals in the Cuban Revolution


A little-known but important chapter of Chinese emigrant history is told through interviews with Armando Choy, Gustavo Chui, and Moises Sio Wong, three Chinese-Cubans who became generals in Cuba's revolution. In Pathfinder Press's new title Our History Is Still being Written, the three men discuss their roles in the 1959 Cuban revolution and talk about what a revolution can accomplish and Cuba's role in the world today.

Martin Koppel, Pathfinder Press, who took part in interviewing the Chinese-Cuban Generals.
Professor David Goodman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (international), University of Technology Sydney

A year to commemorate the life and work of a man who lived comfortably in two worlds, Mei Guangda better known as Quong Tart.

Quong Tart - A short biography

Celebrating Activities - The Quong Tart Centenary Commemoration Committee has planned a year of activities to recognize his contribution to Sydney and Australian society and history.

The Quong Tart Centenary Commemoration Committee (QTCCC) - a committee of the Chinese Australian Historical Society Inc, was formed at the end of 2001 to organise the commemoration of the centenary of the death of Mei Guangda.

AND THEIR CHINESE AUSTRALIAN FAMILIES

Illustrated talks and discussion on some of the NSW country stores and the Chinese families who foundede and operated them from the nineteenth century to the present day. Included will be a guided tour of the What's in Store permanent exhibition at the Powerhouse. Speakers will include Dr Janis Wilton (UNE/Golden Threads), Dr Ian Hoskins (North Sydney Council Historian), Ms Dawn Wong (Wong Sat Family), Harvey Young (Kwong Sings, Glen Innes) and Harry Fay Snr (Hong Yuens, Inverell).
