Leura 29th July 1998

On 29th July 1998 a cold snap brought snow and high winds to the Blue Mountains area of NSW. Although the snowfall was not heavy, the icy conditions caused serious traffic hazards, and the Great Western Highway was closed for several hours, with jackknifed trucks and fallen trees blocking the road. Train services were not significantly affected.

The treacherous driving conditions are clearly apparent in this view looking towards Sydney. All road traffic is stationary as sheets of ice have made the road virtually impassable.
