How to Configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 3

Setup wizard is built into Windows 95 – you should see "The Internet" icon on your desktop. If you do not have this icon on the desktop, go to Programs, to Accessories, and Internet Tools. There you find the "Setup Wizard" (sometimes named "Get On The Internet" or "Get Connected").

The following screens appear after starting "The Internet":

(If you get a message about file sharing, which you may see it if you have two or more computers connected (networked) together, disregard it)

Get Connected! – welcome screen, no entries required, click "Next"
Setup Options – select manual
Welcome to The Internet Setup! – no entries required
How to Connect – select "connect using my phone line"
Internet Mail – select which programs you wish to handle your e-mail. If you select "Yes", you may be asked for Win95 CD-ROM if Windows Messaging is not on your system. If in doubt, select "No" – you can add e-mail program later on (or use another e-mail program, for example Eudora, which has to be configured separately)
Service Provider Information – select "Hermes Internet" (or whatever name you gave to the dial-up connection you set to connect to us). If the area is empty, it means that you do not have the dial-up configured, and you have to do this first!
Phone Number – area code 02 (this prefix is not dialed when you connect), telephone number 47803000, country code Australia.
IP Address – select "My ISP automatically assigns me one"
DNS Server Address – enter:
DNS Server 203.35.8.194
Alternate DNS server 139.130.4.5
Complete Configuration – click "Finish". If you get a message "Your system is configured for a specific DNS (…) do you want to remove the DNS servers (…) – click "No".

The setup is completed, you should be able now to double click on "The Internet" icon and connect to Hermes Internet.

The above instructions are written for a "clean" version of Explorer. There are many Internet access kits on the market which are pre-configured for connection to a specific ISP. If your software came from such a kit you may or may not be able to use it, because some parameters may be locked and impossible to change. For example after connecting to Hermes Internet your Explorer may automatically open a home Web page of another ISP who pre-configured the software. This does not mean that you are connected to their service – you would be simply looking at their Web page. If you want to get a "clean", not pre-configured copy of software you may like to check CDs sold together with various monthly magazines, for example "Australian Personal Computer" or "Australian PC User". We do not recommend downloading large files from Internet, as busy sites (for example Microsoft, Netscape, etc) are often overloaded and unreliable.
